About Us
Welcome to the College Jazz Institute (CJI), a brand new, audition-only 5-day program held from July 9-13, designed to foster the musical growth of aspiring professional musicians at the collegiate level. The CJI was created out of a recognized need to provide a specialized program for students who had experienced the Hilton Head Jazz Camp but found limited options for summer training to build on their university-level education. Taking place during the same week as the Hilton Head Jazz Camp, this institute offers students the chance to work with the same award-winning HHJC faculty and special guests, under the expert direction of sought-after jazz musician Justin Varnes.

At just 19, bassist Kenneth Mason is a rising star in the jazz world—a sought-after musician and jazz camp alum mentored by Delbert Felix, with international experience in South Korea and Japan. The College Jazz Institute is uniquely designed to elevate the skills of talented students like Kenneth, offering tailored training to support their journey toward a professional music career.
Our program is truly tailored to the needs of college students exploring the path to becoming professional musicians. With a focus on combo playing, composing and arranging, advanced improvisation techniques, jazz theory, and carefully selected electives, the CJI equips participants with the tools and insights essential for a thriving music career. From Wednesday to Saturday, students will dive into immersive sessions, culminating in final combo performances on Sunday, July 13th at 2 PM.
Join us for a transformative week of music, mentorship, and inspiration!
